In developing a UK flagship location in London’s St. Martin’s Square, Coffee Island approached AXIA to create a concept design that would usher in the next generation of their brand and interior architecture. With over 400 global locations, this is to be their inaugural shop in the United Kingdom. Coffee Island wished to use this new shop as an opportunity to showcase their holistic approach to the coffee industry, which emphasizes direct relationships and fair trade with coffee farmers, ethics and sustainability throughout the supply chain, and artisanal-level excellence blended with leading-edge science in the roasting process itself. This balance between the old and the new — Victorian-era craftsmanship and sleek, sophisticated technology — is reflected in AXIA’s design for both the cafe and gallery, as well as the logo for signage, cups and coffee bag labels.

Accordingly, the seating and lounge areas employ a material strategy that evokes the natural settings from which coffee originates, while not sacrificing urbanity, comfort and sophistication. This is achieved through several design means, such as photographic depictions of Coffee Island’s farms and farmers, and the more subtle use of walls composed of softer natural fibres. Inspired by Victorian terraria, displays of coffee plants add whimsical touches of the past and act as reminders of the geographically diverse origins of the lattes we drink.

Tasked with designing plentiful indoor seating, AXIA created a mezzanine level above a central bar. One entire length of wall is allowed to run double-height, its sculptural presence maximized. Within this surface, storage and display mechanisms highlight different aspects of the cultivation, roasting, and brewing process, in addition to providing a flexible system for the display of Coffee Island’s broad product range.
