Heritage & Adaptive Reuse

In view of the environmental impacts of demolition and new construction, we believe firmly in renovating and retrofitting old buildings wherever possible to take on new functions in a community. In this spirit, many of our social housing projects have redesigned and breathed new life into old buildings of some historical pedigree. Accordingly, our team at AXIA has become skilled in the complex negotiations with clients, stakeholders and preservation experts that can attend the repurposing and transformation of an original structure into something novel and unforeseen.
With sensitivity and in a collaborative manner, we can guide discussions and provide assessments about the treatment of the original fabric, what can be restored or would better be excised, and any new additions. Recognizing that history and heritage aren’t static entities, but rather are themselves constantly in a state of flux and reassessment, we see our adaptive reuse projects as hybrid creations that stage an interesting dialogue between collective memory and the present moment. Just as cities are continually changing and assuming new purposes, so too should traditional buildings and spaces. Where feasible, we pay homage to the fine craftsmanship of the past by preserving historical motifs and allowing them to offer inspiration to the new design.
