Set in an affluent residential neighbourhood of Hong Kong Island known as Mid-Levels, this two-storey penthouse perches at the edge of an impressive mountain and overlooks the city’s downtown, enjoying views that juxtapose lush nature with a panoply of iconic skyscrapers. AXIA undertook the substantial renovation of this flat on behalf of a childless couple, who asked that special consideration be given to displaying an array of Chinese antiques and heirlooms in their possession. Finding a way to tastefully showcase these treasured objects of the past within an elegant and modern architectural idiom was at the heart of this design project.
Finding inspiration in museum architecture, AXIA created evocative custom millwork display cases for opposite walls of the living room. Brass screens and a black mirror accent wall in the dining room, combined with select pieces of custom-built furniture throughout the flat, similarly work to carry out this careful balance between the old and new, tradition and modernity. An atmosphere of refined opulence is achieved not at the expense of relaxed, easygoing living, in this distinctive flat.
Since one member of the client couple works from home, an office suite with ensuite bathroom was built at the upper level, adjacent to a large terrace that enjoys truly breath-taking views.
