Located in Toronto’s west end, Education through Media was a non-profit organization aimed at granting at-risk youth a safe place to socialize and gain skills of self-expression through technology and media arts, which could translate into employability down the line. AXIA worked closely with the client to renovate and transform what was originally an industrial space into their headquarters doubling as a youth community centre, complete with a media production and training facility. New media labs, such as filming, editing and recording studios, were located in the centre, with lounges and areas for relaxation, collaboration and brainstorming sessions situated adjacently.
Recognizing the robustness and raw beauty of the concrete floors and walls of the original building, AXIA’s design makes a deliberate effort not to cover over — and indeed to accentuate — these striking attributes. In this thoughtful design, a modern architectural language complements and beautifully juxtaposes with gritty conditions of urbanity. It’s a space meant to be used in a relaxed, creative and irreverent manner.
