The site of Kimberly Road Commerce Tower is the bustling commercial district Tsim Sha Tsui in southern Kowloon, Hong Kong. The client wished to develop a twenty-eight floor commercial tower with a focus on restaurants and bars at the podium levels and shops on the upper storeys. AXIA’s design is envisioned as a series of dramatic glass shards, gently tilted to create an eye-catching, evocative presence. In addition to aesthetics, this unique form serves the dual purpose of meeting the city’s requirement for a series of setbacks as the tower rises, in order to maximize sunlight upon the streetscape and fulfill environmental codes.
An escalator system cuts through the prismatic volume of the podium, leading from Kimberly Road to an area full of restaurants on Knutsford Terrace. On this journey, the walls host LED screens for vibrant advertisements and marketing campaigns. As well, AXIA’s proposal features one floor for pop-up events to draw pedestrian flow to the upper reaches of the building. Here, product launches, pop-up galleries and civic events of a cultural nature can find a welcoming venue.
