In an upscale neighbourhood of southern Hong Kong, this one-of-a-kind home enjoys a panoramic sweep from the city on one side to a stunning, unimpeded view of the South China Sea on the other. The client purchased the site with the aim of building a new residence for his partner and their three children. AXIA’s design takes advantage of the geological features of this dramatic landscape, by creating a landscaped podium that enables the house to perch right on the slope. Conceived as an aggregate of white stone blocks that cascade downward toward the sea — interlaced with copper screens — the design achieves a balance between openness and seclusion. The sublimity of the endless sky, ocean and horizon line offers a striking contrast to the sense of enclosure and intimacy provided by the elegantly proportioned rooms of this house.

The interior aspires for a Zen-like atmosphere, a calming antidote to the hustle and bustle of life in a high-density city. Pale natural wood and beige stone flooring soften the harshness of sunlight flowing inward through the large windows to create a more muted, tranquil glow. Select pieces of more opulent materials — such as a bathtub fashioned out of luxurious marble — add personalized accents to the interior space.
Enjoying views of the sea, each bedroom in the house has a generous, continuous terrace to provide further opportunities for moments of inwardness and contemplation. An infinity swimming pool is set on an axis with a reflecting pool at the front of the residence, with the design intention of extending the boundless depths of the sea and nature beyond the domestic threshold.
