Located in the Mong Kok district of Hong Kong — the most densely populated place in the world — this high-rise residential tower exemplifies both the challenges and potential of hyper-urban living. Its surrounding context is comprised of bustling, rapidly gentrifying commercial streets, juxtaposed with an older neighbourhood of residential buildings and smaller local businesses. Seeking to capture the complex, ever-changing relationship between these two elements, AXIA’s design involves a lyrical, shimmering interplay between two main materials: tile and glass. The building’s envelope is composed of an interweaving mixture of fully glazed curtainwall and ceramic cladding.
Due to a very small floorplate, the design had to accommodate extreme narrowness. The twenty-seven storey tower sits upon a commercial podium of five floors, inhabited by various restaurants and shops. Envisioned by the client as service apartments, two different types of residential micro-units were designed, both under 250 square feet. These units are equipped with neutral but elegant furniture and sliding partitions, in order to maximize flexibility and possible modes of living. As part of a larger urban revitalization across Mong Kok, the building aims to uplift and offer a sense of sophistication and ease to a once shabby, neglected part of the city.
