AXIA was approached by Toronto Metropolitan University to conduct a feasibility study, aimed at establishing the university’s Centre for Performance as an epicentre of research and practice in the field of dance, performance and choreography. Since the School of Performance is currently located at three separate places on campus, an overarching aim of the study was to examine how greater unity could be created, by bringing together in one locale a new academic learning hub, a “Productions Commons” catalyst space, and an enhanced theatre.

In undertaking this study, AXIA decided to pursue a consolidated development at Kerr Hall West. In keeping with the university’s Master Plan, this would establish an energized new hub for the school while preserving its on-campus footprint. It also enabled our design proposal to build upon and optimize Kerr Hall, which includes the current entrance of the theatre. In its present configuration, it lacks transparency, identity, and presence along Gerrard Street.

The subject wing of Kerr Hall, which includes the current entrance of the Ryerson Theatre, lacks transparency, identity, and presence along Gerrard Street.

THE PRODUCTION COMMONS
The Production Commons is envisioned as a catalyst space designed for flexibility, collaboration, staging, and focused research. It will bring student energy to a space of industry and public engagement.

THE TORONTO METROPOLITAN UNIVERSITY THEATRE
A state-of-the-art new theatre will serve the teaching and live performance needs of the university, as well as offering a landmark new mid-sized venue for the city at large.

THE TORONTO METROPOLITAN UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF PERFORMANCE
A new and consolidated home for the School of Performance will include spaces for seminars, production activities, and fabrication. Flexible rehearsal rooms will meet the needs of the School’s allied disciplines. Centralized administrative, faculty, and common spaces will enhance collision and collaboration across the entire ecosystem. Its main entrance brings vitality to the corner of Gerrard and Nelson Mandela Walk.
